kubo and the two strings

Kubo and the two strings is a fantasy adventure animated film based on Japanese mythology and history. It's not the usual CGI but a stop-motion animation and it's visually stunning.
Now I see why this animated film received high praise (I even have high praise for it) but it didn't do so well at the box office. Bummer.
The plot is interesting: a one-eyed boy named kubo (Art Parkinson) lives with his mother in a cave and tells stories to the inhabitants of a local village using origami that moves when he plays his shamisen. When kubo breaks his promise to his mother not to stay out after dark, he is discovered by his evil grandfather and aunts who want to take his remaining eye. To save himself, Kubo must go on a quest to find his father's armour and he's accompanied by a no-nonsense monkey and an amnesiac samurai beetle.
It also has interesting characters: like Kubo’s two companions (voiced by Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey) who argue like an old married couple, Raiden the moon king (Ralph Fiennes) who is Kubo’s grandfather and Kubos twin aunts (Rooney Mara), Kameyo (Brenda Vaccaro) an elderly woman widow who is Kubo’s friend (she’s so funny and so young at heart) and Hosato (George Takei) is a villager who teaches his daughter about Japanese customs and history, amongst others.
This film gets an okay from me and although its entertaining, its also kind of serious so I don’t think it will appeal to kids below seven (cos my four year old saw a few scenes and went right back to watching beauty and the beast). Anyways, hope you enjoy it like I did.
