Fences

Denzel Washington produces, directs and stars in this powerful and brilliant drama adapted from a 1983 play by Augustus Wilson.
It is set in a black neighbourhood in 1950's Pittsburg and centres on an average African-American family: Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington), a long-time sanitation worker who is tired of hurling trash and wants to be promoted to a driver, Rose (Viola Davis) a dutiful wife whose life revolves around her husband and family, Lyons (Russel Hornsby) Troy's first son from a previous relationship, who is a talented jazz musician and Cory (Jovan Adepo), who has his hopes set on being recruited to play college football. The film builds slowly but eventually reveals that Troy, a man who seems jovial, devoted to his wife, likes to talk and share drink with his friend Bono (Stephen Henderson) is actually a bitter father to his sons and whose behaviour and infidelity threatens his family.
The first time I saw Fences I said to myself that this film feels like a stage play cos most of the scenes took place either in the Maxson house or backyard. Nevertheless, this film is great, rich dialogue, awesome performances, heartbreak and forgiveness. A shame that it didn't win an academy award for best picture. Thumbs up though to Viola Davis for winning an academy award for best supporting actress for her role in this film. You go gal.
