Starting afresh: it’s a reboot of the Tomb Raider films
series with Alicia Vikander playing a twenty-something year old Lara Croft who
is still figuring “the kind of Croft she is” while trying to come to terms with
the mysterious disappearance of her father.
Why is it when there are no more ideas of how to take a movie franchise
further (especially about an action hero) then the next step is to do a reboot of
the franchise by telling the story from the origin of the character.
This movie is just plain laziness; a reboot of the film
series based on the success of the 2013 reboot of the game series. Just another
way of getting people to spend money to watch non-creative work.
I was however impressed by Vikander’s energy and dedication
in portraying Lara Croft: relentless and stubborn. In the supporting role, Dominic
West did a decent job as Sir Alex Croft. Truthfully, apart from a few passable
action scenes, there was nothing memorable about the film or the rest of the
characters.
The first half of it was dull, the dialogue equally so and the
plot was predictable (I could literally tell what would happen in each scene).
Throughout the film I kept feeling like something was missing… adventure. I
didn’t feel like I was taken into any adventure. Cinematography wasn’t bad
(picture croft under the ocean, a sinking ship, tumultuous sea and a storm) so
cool
Surprised its making waves though, come to think about it so
did the 2001 film even with the negative reviews.
Tomb Raider isn’t wonderful but I believe that it has
potential and a sequel will be much better if done right.
