Crazy Rich Asians is a
romantic comedy based on a 2013 book by Kevin Kwan. It stars Constance Wu as
Rachel Chu, an NYU Economist professor who is in a relationship with Nicolas
Young, played by the handsome Henry Golding. Nicolas convinces Rachel to travel
back home with him to Singapore to attend his best friend’s wedding and to
introduce her to his family. But little did she know that this trip would
reveal that her “ordinary” boyfriend was actually a modern day prince and the
heir to a wealthy Singaporean empire.
It’s not a storyline that hasn’t been
told before but then the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Crazy
Rich Asians has its funny moments, beautiful gifts of locations in Malaysia
and Singapore, family and cultural tradition, the opulent lifestyle of the
Young family and its immediate circle. And of course the biggest draw was the
all-Asian cast, the joy of minorities taking center stage and succeeding.
We had Black Panther in the
beginning of the year but it had MCU to back it up. Crazy Rich Asians is a
testament of the determination to make it the success it is today. I know that
there are criticisms regarding the ethnic diversity of the cast but the thing
is it’s taken several years to make this kind of movie happen again, it’s worth
celebrating and fighting to make it a constant.
Anyways, Crazy Rich Asians tells
the tried and true story of love prevailing over all obstacles no matter the
culture. Enjoy
