Dark Phoenix: Fails to Rise

Dark Phoenix is the twelfth installment in the X-men Franchise. The movie focuses on Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) a mutant with the power of telekinesis whose dark personality, Phoenix, was unleashed when a solar explosion was absorbed by Jean during a rescue mission in outer space with the other members of the X-men. Feeling confused and volatile, Jean is on a mission to find out about her past and control the rage within, and doesn’t care who she hurts; mutant or human. But unknown to her there are forces who crave the power within her.

The storyline is the biggest problem of the film with all the incredible movies so far in 2019 Dark Phoenix is almost two hours of pure boredom.

The underdevelopment of some of the characters also contributed in the disaster of Dark Phoenix. The central character Jean Grey/Phoenix was introduced like five minutes into the film and all of a sudden the audience is expected to sympathize with all her weeping and confusion about her past. It wasn’t that Turner didn’t present a good portrayal of Jean but close up shots of Jean holding her head and weeping all the time was not enough for any sort of emotional attachment.

Then there is Jessica Chastain’s Character Vuk and her ilk who also suffered the same fate of non-character development (note: Vuk’s ridiculous bleached blonde eyebrows and wig may be a distraction). Vuk is the leader of an alien race known as D’Bari whose planet was destroyed by the solar element within Jean and the question of why they were desperate to find Jean and extract the solar element is left unanswered in the film.

There is also the question if the name of the team will remain as the X-Men since Professor Xavier retired at the end of the film. More questions than answers, what a mess.

Even with Dark Phoenix being the X-Men film with its main focus being a female character, I am still disappointed, the X-men Franchise should be going out with a bang like the Avengers. But Dark Phoenix is a mess and not even the talented cast could save it.

Let’s hope the X-Men franchise gets a better farewell with New Mutants coming out in August 2019. Laterz
